[0001] This invention relates to a friction supporting stay, particularly of a type used
to support windows, and is an improvement upon the stay shown and described in our
UK Patent No. 2081803B.
[0002] The friction supporting stay has a track member, usually attached to the window frame
and a bar usually attached to the window light. The bar carries a nose member which
cooperates with the nose-cap so that as the window is closed the nose member enters
the nose-cap and assists in pulling the window to its closed position.
[0003] A problem has arisen, particularly where heavy windows are employed or where the
hinges are of exceptional length, in that as the strut wears it is possible for there
to be sufficient play in the strut for the nose member to miss the nose-cap and ride
over the side of it, which prevents the window closing properly.
[0004] A further problem arises when it is desired to use narrow stays, and therefore narrow
tracks. The width of the nose-cap has to be narrowed normally to align with the narrower
stay and track, but this reduces the possibility of the nose member engaging properly
into the nose-cap.
[0005] An object of the invention is to provide a nose-cap in which both of these disadvantages
may be overcome, and therefore to provide a more efficient form of stay.
[0006] According to the present invention there is a friction stay of a kind comprising
a track with a slider in it and a bar connected to the slider through a link, the
bar having a nose member which cooperates with a nose-cap on one end of and in line
with the track so as to ensure full closing movement of the bar to align with or overlap
the track when the strut is in its closed position, characterised by the nose-cap
having a lateral extension protruding sufficiently far beyond one edge of the track
so as to ensure that the nose member will not inadvertently ride over the outside
of the nose-cap.
[0007] The nose-cap may have assymetrically inclined internal surfaces and the nose member
may have corresponding surfaces.
[0008] The nose-cap may be of plastic material.

Figure 1 shows the upper part of a stay of known kind, in elevation, to illustrate
the problem;
Figure 2 shows the upper portion of a stay incorporating the present invention; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of the stay shown in Figure 2 showing a nose-cap in
accordance with the present invention.
[0010] In Figure 1 is shown a track 10 of a stay of the kind shown in Patent Specification
2081803 except that in this instance the nose-cap is of a different internal shape
to that shown in the earlier Patent Specification.
[0011] The track 10 carries a nose-cap 11 and a bar 12 carries a nose member 13. A portion
of a link 14 is also shown, the remaining details of the stay being as shown in Patent
2081803.
[0012] It will be seen that it is possible for the nose member 13 to ride over the side
15 of the nose-cap 11 if there is undue wear or play in the strut.
[0013] In Figure 2 is shown the upper portion of a stay modified in accordance with this
invention.
[0014] The stay has a track member 16, a bar 17, a slider 18 to which the bar is connected
by a link 19, a brace 20 of which only a part is shown, a strut 21 which interconnects
the bar 17 and the brace 20.
[0015] Mounted on the track 16 is a nose-cap 22 shown in detail in Figure 3. The nose-cap
22 has a lateral extension 23 which extends beyond the outer edge 24 of track 16.
[0016] By forming this lateral extension of the nose-cap the nose member will invariably
be prevented from riding along the outside of the nose-cap (in the manner shown in
Figure 1) and will always come into the interior part of the nose-cap where the surfaces
25 and 26 cooperate to ensure that the hinge closes properly and the window is brought
into its fully closed position.
[0017] The invention may be applied to a nose-cap which has an assymetric internal surface
26 as shown in Figures 2 and 3 or one which has a symmetrical internal surface as
shown in our earlier Patent 2081803 or any other form of internal surface.
1. A friction stay of a kind comprising a track (10) with a slider (18) in it and
a bar (17) connected to the slider (18) through a link (19), the bar having a nose
member (13) which cooperates with a nose-cap (22) on one end of and in line with the
track so as to ensure full closing movement of the bar to align with or overĀlap the
track when the strut is in its closed position characterised by the nose-cap (22)
having a lateral extension (23) protruding sufficiently far beyond one edge of the
track (16) so as to ensure that the nose member (13) will not inadvertently ride over
the outside of the nose-cap (22).
2. A stay according to claim 1 characterised in that the nose-cap (22) has assymetrically
inclined internal surfaces (26) and the nose member (13) has corresponding surfaces
(25).
3. A strut according to claim 1 or claim 2 and characterised in that the nose-cap
is of plastic material.
