(57) A chess board comprises a base (10) and a plurality of elements, for example comprising support plates (20), having support surfaces of two contrasting colours for supporting chess playing pieces. The different support surfaces may be positioned at selected heights relative to the base, for example the different support plates (20) being mounted on pegs (30) of selected lengths. The arrangement enhances the players' enjoyment of the game and can also improve their playing ability.
