Description

[0001] The invention relates to a device for tearing one sheet of flexible material at a time from a length wound onto a roll, comprising a frame, a roll holder suspended in the frame and a knife strip suspended parallel to the roll shaft in the frame. Such a device is much used to package shop products, for instance bouquets of flowers, meat products and the like, wherein use is increasingly being made of foil paper either as single packaging material or in combination with other sheet material.

[0002] It has been found that the plastic foil is difficult to unroll and difficult to tear off on the knife strip, since after each use the foil will re-adhere to the roll from which it came. Furthermore, tearing is made more difficult by the high degree of elasticity.

[0003] The first object of the invention is to provide a device whereby the above stated drawbacks are obviated, and the device according to the invention is distinguished in that between the roll and the knife strip there is arranged a table over which the length of flexible material can be guided.

[0004] Surprisingly, it has been found that the table between the roll and the knife strip facilitates not only easy grasping of the length of flexible material (it is only necessary to slide the foil from the roll with the fingers in the direction of the knife strip while carrying along the foil and then to cut this foil over the desired length with the knife edge).

[0005] It is recommended to place the knife edge with the cutting edge directed upward, which facilitates tearing-off of the foil by exerting a downward force thereon. A sharply defined cut can hereby be obtained.

[0006] The invention further has for its object to provide a device which is suitable for the usual packing material, such as paper, as well as for the above stated foil sheet without increasing the number of different components. This enhances assembly of the device.

[0007] The device according to the invention is distinguished in that the frame is provided with mounting elements which are each provided integrally with a first chamber for receiving the end part of the knife strip, and a second chamber for receiving the end part of the roll shaft.

[0008] As a result of the uniform mounting parts the knife strip respectively the roll shaft holder can be embodied uniformly and different rolls can be arranged one above another in a frame, all with the same mounting element.

[0009] In order to enable arrangement of the knife strip in both upward and downward direction in relation to the cutting edge, it is recommended according to the invention to accommodate the knife strip in a clamping piece which can be snapped into the chamber for the knife strip. Not only an easy exchangeability but also a reversing position for the knife strip are hereby realized.

[0010] It is recommended to also use the mounting elements to support the above mentioned table for guiding of the foil.

[0011] In a further embodiment the device is also suitable for removing labels from a roll.

[0012] Above mentioned and other features of the invention will be further elucidated hereinbelow on the basis of an embodiment.

[0013] In the drawing:

Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a device provided with a double set of rolls of sheet material, for material which easy to tear as well as material which is difficult to tear.

Fig. 2 shows a standing view, partly in cross-section, of the lower mounting element in figure 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an embodiment suitable for label rolls.

[0014] Figure 1 shows an assembled embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown.

[0015] The device consists of a common frame 1, here in the form of a rectangular bracket of tube and strip material. This bracket is provided with supports 2 so that the frame can be held vertical. The frame is preferably constructed from two upright strips which are bent through an angle of 90° at the top and bottom, and which ends protrude into a tubular frame part 1', which can be fixed to the ends of the strip by any suitable fixing means. The frame can hereby be assembled in simple manner, wherein reference is made to the slotted openings in the supports 2 which are also clamped in simple manner. Assembly of the frame can thus be carried out simply and the purchaser of the device can easily assemble it himself from a construction kit.

[0016] Supports 2 can of course be embodied differently, so that other methods of fixing the frame, for instance to the wall, become possible within the scope of the invention.

[0017] Arranged along the vertical posts 3 of frame 1 are mounting elements 4 which serve for suspending of rolls R of random sheet material and suspending of an associated knife strip 5.

[0018] Each mounting element 4 can be arranged and fixed at random height along post 3. Between two opposite mounting elements 4, which here form an integral injection moulded article, the shaft 6 for the roll R can be received, this in two ways. Mounting element 4 takes a hollow form on the inside and has a ridged configuration which is mirror-symmetrical in the horizontal plane. At one end the ridge 7 has a first chamber 8 and a second chamber 9, which latter has a semicircular form and in which fits the end of roll shaft 6. Roll shaft 6 can however also be placed on the inclining surface of ridge 7, so that this shaft 6 will move with roll R to the left in figure 1. This is further elucidated below.

[0019] Together with first chamber 8 the mounting element 4 forms a space for receiving the ends of knife strip 5.

[0020] The knife strip 5, see figure 2, is held in a knife holder 10, the ends of which are fixed to a clamping piece 11 which further bears a rod 12 which extends parallel to knife holder 10 respectively knife strip 5. At the lefthand end the chamber 8 has a groove 13 and an opposite groove 14 into which fit a nose 15 respectively a lip 16, this such that the clamping piece can be secured in the position according to figure 2 by means of a handle 17 on clamping piece 11.

[0021] Since chamber 8 has a mirror-symmetrical embodiment 8' for each mounting element 4, the knife strip can also be clamped in reverse manner in upper chamber 8', see the upper pair of mounting elements in figure 1.

[0022] In accordance with the main characteristic of the invention, the space between roll R and knife strip 5 is partially spanned by a table 20 in the form of a U-shaped profile strip of random material. The material is chosen such that it meets with little friction from the length of material from roll R.

[0023] Reference is made to the lower roll R in figure 1, wherein roll shaft 6 remains in the recess of chamber 9. There results in a great distance between roll R and knife strip 5, which distance is spanned by table 20.

[0024] Figure 2 shows that the downward bent end flanges of table 20 support at the ends on the ridge 7 in mounting element 4. The table remains lying non-displaceably on ridge 7 due to a suitable recess 21 in which an upright ridge 7' can be received.

[0025] The use of the device of figure 1 is as follows.

[0026] The user hangs a roll of sheet material R with roll shaft 6 therethrough in the second chamber 9 of mounting element 4 and, depending on the type of sheet material, places a table 20 adjacently of the roll on the ridge 7 of the mounting elements. In this case the knife strip 5 with an upward directed cutting edge is snapped fixedly in the lower first chamber 8 of the mounting elements. This situation can be seen in the lower roll of figure 1.

[0027] With a different type of sheet material the knife strip with a downward directed cutting edge is placed between mounting elements 4, see the top of figure 1, and the roll can then be lifted with roll shaft 6 out of the chamber such that it rolls down over the ridge 7 in the direction of rod 12. It is noted that in this case the length is guided from above along the underside of rod 12 and the length is severed by being pulled upward along the cutting edge of knife strip 5.

[0028] In the bottom sheet material, which can be of very thin foil, a part of the foil remains lying on table 20. Using his fingers the user can pull the length toward him and can then tear off the sheet on knife strip 5 in downward direction, see figure 2. The end of the foil remains lying on table 20 and is therefore easily accessible and manageable for subsequent use. In this case the foil is pulled off roll R from below. It is possible to guide two foil lengths simultaneously over the same knife strip in order to form composite packaging paper.

[0029] Figure 3 shows an embodiment which is suitable for removing labels from a label roll. As is usual, the roll consists of a flexible carrier strip to which the labels are releasably adhered.

[0030] The rolls are mounted in a U-shaped housing which is placed on the ridges 7 of mounting elements 4, this in similar manner to table 20. Bent wire ends are placed in pre-punched holes 26 in housing 25, which serve to separate and support different label rolls adjacently of each other.

[0031] Knife holder 10 is placed such that knife 5 is directed downward, so that it is in fact rendered inoperative. The flexible label strip is carried between rod 12 and over the upper side of the knife holder, so that when the label strip is pulled out it automatically detaches the label due to the sharp bend, whereby it is easy to remove. The embodiment of figure 3 can of course be enlarged by applying higher strips 1, so that rolls R as according to figure 1 can be arranged under housing 25 or thereabove.

[0032] The invention is not limited to the above described embodiment, and more than two of the shown rolls of the same or different material and/or of different width can for instance be suspended in the frame. This does not necessarily have to be packing paper, foils for kitchen purposes are also possible.
