(57) A rotor is disclosed for a synchronous machine comprising: a rotor core (22); a super-conducting coil winding extending around at least a portion of the rotor core, the coil winding having a pair of side sections on opposite sides of the rotor core; and a conductive shield (96) around the rotor core and covering the coil winding.
