[0001] The present invention concerns a standard lamp.
[0002] In particular, the invention concerns a standard lamp of the type which mainly consists
of a standard comprising a foot and an upward directed support mounted upon it, whereby
at least a lamp holder with a lamp, and usually also a lamp shade are provided on
this support.
[0003] Such standard lamps are used among others for additional lighting or atmospheric
lighting in an interior, as desk lamps or the like.
[0004] These lamps are found both as low and high embodiments, whereby the low embodiment
is usually designed to be placed on an elevation, such as on a piece of furniture
or the like, whereas the high embodiment is placed rather directly on the floor.
[0005] It is known that, for packing such standard lamps, relatively large packagings are
required.
[0006] A first disadvantage thereof is that such known standard lamps occupy much storage
space and transport space when packed.
[0007] A second disadvantage is that, for packing such known standard lamps, large amounts
of packaging material are required which partly determine the cost price of the standard
lamps.
[0008] One way to remedy the above mentioned problem is for example known from US 6.357.896
and WO 94/01715. These documents describe lamps having a support, which consist of
several different parts, but which lamps have the disadvantage that the different
parts are mounted together by very complicated connectors, that can not easily be
produced so that they are rather expensive.
[0009] The present invention aims to remedy the above-mentioned and other disadvantages.
[0010] To this aim, the invention concerns a standard lamp which is made such that, for
a single height of the standard lamp, it can be put in a considerably smaller packaging.
[0011] This has for a result that the storage space for the thus packed standard lamps,
at the manufacturer's as well as at the distributor's or seller's of such standard
lamps, is considerably reduced.
[0012] Moreover, this implies that also the transport space is reduced, so that a considerably
larger number of packed standard lamps can be placed on a single means of transport.
[0013] Finally, this results in considerable economies of packaging material, so that the
final selling price of such standard lamps is significantly reduced on the one hand,
and less waste is produced on the other hand.
[0014] In order to realise the above-mentioned advantages, the standard lamp according to
the invention consists of a standard comprising a foot and an upward directed support
mounted on said foot, whereupon at least a lamp holder for a lamp is provided and
which consists of at least two coaxial parts, the far ends of said parts that are
directed towards one another being provided respectively with a female part and a
male part working in conjunction with this female part, whereby said male part is
made in the shape of a U-shaped protrusion with legs and which are mutually connected
by means of a cross wall, such that these standard lamps can be easily mounted by
simply sliding the male part and the female part into one another.
[0015] This makes it possible to arrange this simple standard lamp in two parts next to
one another in the packaging, requiring a packaging which is considerably less high
than in case the support is provided in one piece, as with the known standard lamps.
[0016] In order to better explain the characteristics of the invention, the following preferred
embodiment of a standard lamp according to the invention is described as an example
only without being limitative in any way, with reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which:
figure 1 is a view in perspective of a standard lamp according to the invention;
figure 2 represents a section according to line II-II in figure 1;
figure 3 represents a rear view of the part indicated by F3 in figure 1, in perspective
and to a larger scale;
figure 4 represents the part indicated by F4 in figure 2 to a larger scale;
figures 5 and 6 respectively show sections according to the lines V-V and VI-VI in
figure 4;
figure 7 represents a section of a standard lamp according to the invention put in
a packaging.
[0017] A standard lamp according to the invention mainly consists of a standard 1 which
is formed of a foot 2 and an upward directed support 3 mounted upon it which is provided
with a lamp shade 4 at its top end with a lamp holder 5 plus lamp 6 in it.
[0018] According to the invention, the support 3 consists of two coaxial parts, 7 and 8
respectively, which in this case are formed of two tubes with a rectangular cross
section, the lower part 7 of which is fixed with its lower far end on the foot 2,
whereas the top part is situated in the prolongation of the lower part 7 and is slightly
bent.
[0019] The lower part 7 is provided with a female part 9 at its top end which can work in
conjunction with a male part 10 provided at the lower end of the top part 8.
[0020] The female part 9 in this case consists of the far end of the tube forming the lower
end 7, in particular of the far ends of the four walls 11, 12, 13 and 14 of this tube,
and of a rib 15 provided on the inner side of the wall 11, at least in its top end,
whereby said female part 9 forms a U-shaped opening 16.
[0021] The male part 10 on the lower end of the top part 8 is in this case made of a protrusion
having a U-shaped cross-section with legs 17 and 18 which are mutually connected by
a cross wall 19.
[0022] The height A and the width B of the U-shaped protrusion, or in other words the outside
dimensions of the legs 17-18 respectively and of the cross wall 19 of the male part
10, are mainly equal to the intermediate distance C of the opposite walls 11-13 and
the intermediate distance D of the other opposite walls 12-14 of the female part 9.
[0023] It is clear that, with the same result, the female part can be provided in the part
8 and the male part on the part 7.
[0024] The lamp holder 5 is connected to a line cord 20 provided in the top part 8 through
the parts 7 and 8 of the support 3 via an opening 21, after which the line cord 21
leaves the lower part 7 via an opening 22.
[0025] A standard lamp according to the invention can be put very easily in a packaging
25, as is represented in figure 7, so to say in two parts, 23 and 24 respectively.
[0026] It is clear that the packaging 25 can be made considerably smaller in this case than
the packaging required to put away a conventional standard lamp with a one-piece support
and similar dimensions.
[0027] The dimensions of the parts 7 and 8 of the support 3 are preferably selected such
that the loose parts 23 and 24 of the standard lamp have practically the same length,
such that the packaging 25 only has to be half as high in this case as in the case
of a conventional one-piece standard lamp having the same dimensions.
[0028] Once the standard lamp according to the invention has been taken out of its packaging
25, it can be very easily mounted.
[0029] One only has to place the top part 8 of the support 3 on the lower part 7 of the
support 3 with the male part 10 directed towards the female part 9, and to subsequently
connect the parts 7 and 8 coaxially by pushing the male part 10 in the female part
9, such that the rib 15 of the female part 9 is brought between the legs 18 and 19
of the male part 10.
[0030] It is clear that, in this way, the female part 9 and the male part 10 only fit in
a single manner, so that mistakes are excluded while mounting the standard lamp.
[0031] The dimensions of the female part 9 and the male part 10 are preferably such that
they slide into one another in a clamping manner, so that a rigid fastening is obtained
between the parts 23 and 24 of the standard lamp.
[0032] Moreover, the dimensions of the female part 9 and of the male part 10 are preferably
selected such that the distance between the rib 15 of the female part 9 and the opposite
cross wall 19 of the male part 10 is equal to or somewhat smaller than the thickness
of the line cord 20, so that this line cord 20 is clamped between said rib 15 and
the cross wall 19 in a mounted standard lamp, preventing that the line cord 21 can
be inadvertently drawn out of the support 3.
[0033] Although, in the given example, the support 3 is composed of tubes with a rectangular
shape, tubes having round or other shapes are not excluded either. Naturally, in this
case, the male part must have an adapted shape.
[0034] According to a variant which is not represented in the figures, the lower part 7
of the support 3 can be made in the shape of a rectangular tube without a rib 15,
so that, in this case, the male part 10 can be made in the shape of a rectangular
protrusion having the same outside dimensions as the inside dimensions of the rectangular
tube concerned.
[0035] Nor is it excluded, according to the invention, that the support 3 consists of more
than two parts, as a result of which the packaging can be made even smaller. Thus,
for example, the lower part 7 of the support 3 can be provided as separate from the
foot 2 in the packaging, whereby, before the standard lamp can be mounted, said lower
part 7 must first be provided on the foot 2 and must subsequently be fixed, for example
by means of a screw or the like.
[0036] The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiment represented
in the accompanying drawings; on the contrary, such a standard lamp according to the
invention can be made in all shapes and dimensions while still remaining within the
scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
