Reducing oxides of nitrogen using hydrogen generated from engine fuel and exhaust |
(57) The invention provides a system for reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the exhaust
of a hydrocarbon- fuelled, internal combustion engine (9), comprising:
a hydrogen generator (22) having an inlet and an outlet for converting engine fuel,
oxygen and moisture to hydrogen and carbon monoxide, said hydrogen generator providing
an outflow at its outlet (26) including hydrogen and carbon dioxide; and
NOx catalytic converters (28) or NOx traps (35,36) for receiving said engine exhaust
and said outflow for reducing the NOx in said engine exhaust
characterized by:
means (19) for providing a mixture of fuel from said source (12) with air from air
inlet (11) and said engine exhaust to the inlet of said hydrogen generator.
