    Description

    [0001] The present invention relates to a foldable support structure, in particular for a clothes airer, and a foldable clothes airer incorporating said structure.

    [0002] Clothes airers are known with a support structure formed from two identical I-shaped support elements hinged together at the same height from the floor, which when in their operative position are disposed to form an "X" and support a grid element for hanging the clothes to be dried, while when in their rest position they form a closed "X" to hence reduce the transverse dimension of the clothes airer when not in use.

    [0003] Reducing the bulk of clothes airers of the aforesaid type when in their rest position is an important problem for producers of such articles because as this type often has a low sales price, the costs of storage of such products and of their transport from their place of production to their place of sale to the public has to be kept as low as possible. The same problem also arises, although to a lesser extent, for users of clothes airers, as present-day dwellings are increasingly smaller in size and consequently there is not always sufficient space to store such products.

    [0004] A foldable support structure for a clothes dryer is known from DE 2 234 235 A1.

    [0005] An object of the present invention is to provide a foldable support structure, in particular for a clothes airer, and a clothes airer incorporating said structure, by which the aforesaid problems are overcome and in particular enables the transverse dimension of the structure to be reduced when in its rest position.

    [0006] These and other objects which will be apparent to an expert of the art are attained by a structure and clothes airer in accordance with the characterising part of the accompanying claims.

    [0007] The present invention will be more apparent from the accompanying drawings, which are provided by way of non-limiting example and in which:

    Figure 1 is a schematic side view of a clothes airer of the invention in its operative position;

    Figures 2A and 2B are schematic front views of two components thereof;

    Figures 3A, B are a schematic view from above and a schematic side view of a further component;

    Figure 4 is a schematic side view thereof as in Figure 1 but with the clothes airer in its rest position, in which one component of the clothes airer is shown with dashed lines and one with full lines to make the figure more intelligible;

    Figures 5A, B are side views of the detail indicated by the arrow A of Figure 2A;

    Figure 6 is a perspective view of the upper part of the clothes airer when in its rest position.

    [0008] With reference to said figures, these show a clothes airer comprising a foldable support structure according to the invention, of the type presenting two support elements 1, 2 (Figures 2A, B) each comprising an upright 3, 4 and, respectively, a lower crosspiece 5, 6 and an upper crosspiece 7, 8, provided at the ends E1-4 of said uprights and disposed on each upright parallel to and superposed on each other perpendicular to said upright, to act respectively as feet for said structure and as supports for a clothes holding element 9 to be supported by said structure, said uprights comprising hinge means 10 provided between said ends E1-4 to enable said structure to assume an operative position O (Figure 1), in which said support elements are positioned as an "X" and the upper crosspieces 7, 8 are arranged to support said holding element 9, and a rest position C (Figure 4) in which said support elements are close together (Figure 4) to substantially reduce the transverse dimension T1 of the clothes airer when not in use.

    [0009] According to the invention, at each of its two ends E4 and E3 the upright 4 of the support element 2 presents a seat 11, 12 for at least partially housing a portion P1, P2 of the respective crosspiece 7, 5 of the other support element 1. As described in detail hereinafter the support elements 1 and 2 are dimensioned and hinged together such that when in the rest position C (Figure 4) the crosspieces 5 and 7 housed in the respective seats 11 and 12 are substantially superposed, parallel and coplanar with the other crosspieces 6 and 8, so reducing the transverse dimension T1 of said structure when in said rest position C, such that said transverse dimension T1 is determined substantially only by the thickness T3 (Figure 5B) of said crosspieces 5-8. It should be noted that in the present context, the term "substantially" means in the sense that the geometrical and dimension characteristics preceded by this term are not to be taken as exact, but allowing a slight margin of difference; consequently the crosspieces could also not be perfectly superposed or coplanar (and have for example a misalignment less than one half of their transverse dimension T3, Figure 5B, with the transverse dimension T1 of the clothes airer when in its closed position being slightly greater than the transverse dimension T3 of the crosspieces (i.e., as shown in Figure 5B, with S1, relative to T3, having a greater dimension margin which is however less than one half the transverse dimension T3 of the crosspiece).

    [0010] According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the upright 4 presents the seats 11 and 12 at a height H1 greater than the height H2 of the other upright 3, because of the presence of said seats; the hinging point P1, P2 of the two uprights 3 and 4 is also at a height H3, H4 from the floor which is different for the two uprights, to enable the crosspieces 5 and 7 of the upright 3 to be able to be housed in said seats 11, 12 of the other upright 4 in order to enable said support structure to assume when in its rest position C (Figure 4) a shape in which all the crosspieces are substantially superposed and coplanar to hence reduce the transverse dimension T1 (Figure 4) of the structure when in said position.

    [0011] The seats 11, 12 of the upright 4 are obtained by simply compressing the ends of the upright, which for this purpose is preferably made of a tubular material. The seats 11, 12 are consequently formed from a flat part 13, 14 of small thickness S1 (Figure 5B), for example about 1/10 of the transverse dimension T3 (Figure 5B) of the uncompressed part of the crosspiece, however less than one half of said transverse dimension T3. The seats 11, 12 are provided in positions rotated mutually through 180° about a longitudinal axis of the upright. The crosspieces connected to the upright 4 are also secured to the ends of the seats 11, 12, so that the transverse dimension 11 (Figure 5B) of the combined crosspiece 6 or 8 and upright 4 is extremely small and equal substantially to the transverse dimension T3 of the crosspiece 6 or 8 (as shown in Figure 5B), as the thickness S1 of the flat element forming the seat 12 is much smaller than that of the crosspiece 6 or 8.

    [0012] To limit as much as possible the transverse dimension T1 of the clothes airer when closed, the crosspieces 7 and 5 are also secured to the relative upright 3 in the same manner as described for the upright 4. The upright 3, of tubular form, therefore also comprises ends E1, 2 compressed to form a flat part 15, 16 to which the crosspieces 5 and 6 are secured. Again for the upright 3 the flat parts are rotated one to the other through an angle of 180°. It should be noted that the flat parts are provided on the uprights 3 and 4 in such a manner that when the clothes airer is closed (Figure 6) they become the most outer portions of the clothes airer.

    [0013] Advantageously, both the uprights 3, 4 and the crosspieces 5-8 are produced from the same tubular metal element suitably shaped and treated, for example plastic-coated or painted, in a manner conventional to the expert of the art.

    [0014] The hinge means 10 comprise a simple through hole provided in the uprights for the passage of a usual pin, the structure hinging axis A3 and that of said holes (A1, A2 Figure 2) being parallel to the plane defined by the compressed ends 13, 14, 15, 16 of the uprights 3 and 4, the hinging hole for the larger-dimension upright being at a height T3 from the floor which is greater than that T4 of the corresponding hole of the other upright 3, to enable the crosspieces 5 and 7 of the upright 3 to be able to be housed in the respective seats 11 and 12 of the other upright 4 when the clothes airer is closed.

    [0015] The holding element 9 is of the conventional type comprising parallel rods 17 secured at their ends to a rectangular frame 18, also formed from rods fixed together. Members 19 for hinging the holding element 9 to the aforedescribed support structure project from each corner of one of the minor sides of the frame 18, said members being of L-shape with the minor arm 19A able to engage in the holes of the ends of the upper crosspiece 7, to form said hinge. From the other minor side of the frame 18, hooking means 20 project, presenting a hook 20A to removably engage the other upper crosspiece 8.

    [0016] Finally it should be noted that the aforedescribed embodiment is provided by way of non-limiting example only, and that numerous variants are possible all falling within the same inventive concept. For example, instead of being both provided on the same upright, the seats 11, 12 for housing a portion of the crosspieces could be provided one on one upright and one on the other upright with evident dimensional modifications to said uprights. Likewise, the crosspieces 5 and 6 could be slightly inclined in shape, as in Figures 1-4, or be of another shape, for example horizontal as in Figure 6. The holding element 9 could also be of different type, but conventional to the expert of the art, if the structure of the invention instead of being used for a clothes airer were to be used for example for other purposes, such as a support for a folding table or chair. To strengthen the support structure, each of the two uprights 3 and 4 could be replaced by a plurality of uprights, all presenting a shape similar to that already described, and/or by a support structure of frame type, for example rectangular.
