    Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] This invention relates to a pivot assembly for packaging and in particular to a pivot assembly for a point of sale display carton or box, and to a point of display packaging incorporating said pivot assembly.

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] It is known to provide a point of sale display carton, typically made from corrugated cardboard, within which consumer products can be packaged for transportation to the point of sale, and within which the products are displayed at the point of sale, such that the purchaser's attention is drawn to the products and whereby the purchaser has access to the products. Such display carton may be assembled and filled with products prior to being supplied to the point of sale or may be supplied as flat blanks to be assembled and filled with products at the point of sale.

[0003] Typically a header or top card (typically referred to as a "topper") is provided, extending upwardly from a rear wall of the display carton and upon which advertising and branding or other information about the products may be printed. Such topper is deployed when the carton is in use at the point of sale.

[0004] It is known to provide separate, detachable toppers which can be attached to the display carton at the point of sale. However, known detachable toppers may be lost, may not be mounted correctly and provided limited space for advertising and branding.

[0005] Alternatively, the topper may be integrated with the body of the display carton. However, this increases the size of the display carton during transport and prevents removal and replacement of the topper for customisation of a standard display carton.

[0006] In another prior art solution, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, a topper 2 is provided having a rear wall 4, adapted to be aligned with the rear wall of the display carton 6, and side walls 8,10 extending on either side of the display carton 6, the side walls 8,10 of the topper 2 being attached to the sides of the display carton 6 by means of axially aligned plastic connectors 12 permitting the topper 2 to be pivoted with respect to the display carton 6 between an operative configuration (shown in Figure 1), wherein the rear wall 4 of the topper 2 is aligned with and extends upwardly from the rear wall of the display carton 6, and a stowed or transport configuration (not shown), wherein the rear wall 4 of the topper 2 is located in front of the display carton 6. This allows the topper 2 to be attached to the display carton 6 when it is assembled and also allows the topper 2 to protect the packaged products during transport of the display carton 6 to the point of sale. However, the use of plastic components is undesirable from a recycling perspective and the need to assemble the plastic connectors during attachment of the topper to the display carton increases assembly time of the display carton prior to packing. KR2012 0117303, DE 102015111163, US 808766 and SE433339 disclose known pivotal connecting arrangements for packaging.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0017] Figure 3 and 4 illustrate a point of sale display unit comprising a display carton 20, which may be made from corrugated cardboard, within which consumer products can be packaged for transportation to the point of sale, and within which the products can be displayed at the point of sale, said display carton 20 incorporating integrally formed pivot assemblies 30,32 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention for pivotably connecting a topper 40 to the display carton 20, allowing the topper 40 to be pivotably attached to the display carton 20 without the use of any separate fasteners and without requiring any plastic components.

[0018] The display carton 20 comprises a rear wall 22 and first and second opposing side walls 24,26 extending perpendicular to and forwardly from lateral sides of the rear wall 22, and a bottom wall 28, to define a cuboid container, having at least a partially open front face and at least partially open upper face, within which container consumer products can be packaged and displayed. Preferably the display carton 20 is formed from a single foldable blank, as is known in the art.

[0019] The topper 40 comprises a rear wall 42, upon which advertising and branding or other promotional information about the products to be held in the display carton 20 may be printed, and first and second side walls 44,46 extending perpendicular to and forwardly from either side of the rear wall 42 when the topper 40 is in the operative configuration, as shown in Figure 3.

[0020] The respective pivot assemblies 30,32 are integrally formed in overlapping portions of first and second side walls 24,26,44,46 of each of the display carton 20 and topper 40 to define a pivot coupling allowing the topper 40 to be rotated about a pivot axis "X" extending parallel to the rear wall 22 of the display carton 20 between an operative configuration, shown in Figure 3, wherein the rear wall 42 of the topper 40 is contiguous with and extends upwardly from the rear wall 22 of the display carton 20, and an out of use configuration, shown in Figure 4, wherein the rear wall 42 of the topper 40 is located in front of and substantially parallel to the rear wall 22 of the display carton 20 to cover at least a portion of a front face of the display carton 20.

[0021] As illustrated in Figure 5, each pivot assembly 30,32 comprises a substantially circular aperture 54 formed in a respective one of the first and second side walls 24,26 of the display carton 20 and first and second tabs 56,58 integrally formed in and extending from a respective one of the first and second side walls 44,46 of the topper 40, wherein the first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 are adapted to be inserted through the respective aperture 54 thereof, the apertures 54 of the pivot assemblies 30,32 being axially aligned on said pivot axis "X" such that the topper 40 can rotate with respect to the display carton 20 about said pivot axis "X".

[0022] Each first tab 56 extends from a first fold line 60 and each second tab 58 extends from a second fold line 62, said first and second fold lines 60,62 extending parallel to one another and having a spacing and less than the diameter of the respective aperture 54 through which the respective tabs 54,56 are inserted. Diverging cut lines 64,66,68,70 extend from either end of each of said first and second fold lines 60,62 to define outwardly diverging side edges of the respective tab 56,58. The cuts lines 64,66,68,70 may be straight or curved.

[0023] Preferably each of the first and second fold lines 60,62 of each pivot assembly 30,32 has a length substantially equal to length of a respective chord of the aperture 54 with which chord the respective fold line 60,62 is aligned when the first and second tabs 56,58 are inserted through the respective aperture 54.

[0024] Each of the said first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 has an outer edge having a length substantially equal to the diameter of the respective aperture 54.

[0025] This arrangement allows the first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 to be folded about their respective fold lines 60,62 to lie substantially perpendicular to the respective side wall 44,46 of the topper 40, whereby the respective first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 can be inserted through the respective aperture 54 with the outer edge of each first and second tab 56,58 substantially aligned with a centre line of the respective aperture 54. Once inserted through the respective aperture 54, the respective first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 may be folded about its respective fold line 60,62 away from one another and towards an inner face of the respective side wall 24,26 of the display carton 20 such that the diverging sides of each of the first and second tabs 56,58 of each pivot assembly 30,32 prevent the tabs 56,58 from being easily pulled back through the respective aperture 54, thereby coupling the topper 40 to the display carton 20 while permitting the topper 40 to be pivoted about said pivot axis "X" defined by the axially aligned apertures 54 in the side walls 24,26 of the display carton 20 between its operative and out of use configurations. Preferably the diverging cut lines 64,66,68,70 defining the side edges of each of the first and second tabs 56,58 terminate in an opening or cut out 72 formed in the respective side wall 44,46 of the topper 40 or at an outer edge of the respective side wall 44,46 of the topper 40. This allows a user to engage an outer edge of each tab 56,58 with a finger to fold the respective tab 56,58 about is respective fold line 60,62 from a first position, aligned with the plane of the respective side wall 44,46 of the topper 40 to a second position, extending substantially perpendicular to the plane of the respective side wall 44,46 of the topper 40.

[0026] As shown in Figure 5, the or each opening 72 may have a semi-circular shape, comprising a curved edge portion and a substantially straight edge portion, said substantially straight edge portion defining an outer edge of a respective one of the first and second tabs 56,58.

[0027] While the apertures 54 of the pivot assemblies 30,32 are described as being formed in the side walls 24,26 of the display carton 20 and the tabs 56,58 are described as being formed in the side walls 44,46 of the topper 40, it is envisaged that the apertures may be formed in the side walls of the topper while the cooperating tabs may be formed in the side walls of the display carton.

[0028] The provision of integrally formed pivot assemblies 30,32 in the side walls 24,26,44,46 of the display carton 20 and topper 40 avoids the need for additional fastening devices, facilitates rapid assembly of the point of sale display unit and avoids the use of plastic parts, thereby overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art.

[0029] While the pivot assemblies are described in relation to the pivotal attachment of a topper to a display carton, it is envisaged that a pivot assembly in accordance with the present invention may be utilised wherever it is desired to couple first and second panels to one another in a manner to permit relative rotation between said first and second panels.
