Die auf den Hülsenrand (60) der Hülse (6) einer Kreuzspule aufzubringende Fadenreserve (16) ist so beschaffen, daß das Fadenende (70) geradlinig oder je nach Hülsenart längs einer Schraubenlinie oder längs einer raumlichen Spirale auf dem Hülsenende (60) aufliegt. Das Fadenende (70) ist mit einer vorgebbaren Anzahl kreuzungsfrei nebeneinanderliegender Windungen überspult. Dabei sind die Windungen vorzugsweise mit Abstand nebeneinanderliegend angeordnet. Die zuerst gespulte Windung (62) ist am weitesten vom Hülsenrand entfernt. Die Vorrichtung zum Herstellen der Fadenreserve (15) ist vorzugsweise Bestandteil einer fahrbaren, von Spulstelle zu Spulstelle einer Kreuzspulen herstellenden Maschine wanderfähigen Bedienungsvorrichtung. Das Fadenende (70) wird entweder auf eine Länge von maximal 1 cm gekappt oder ein mindestens einige Zentimeter langer Endabschnitt (76) des Fadenendes wird im Inneren der Hülse (6) deponiert.
