[origin: EP0462047A1] During the process, the article (10) to be provided with the surface layer (101), or part of said article, is heated to a first temperature by means of an inductive RF/MF generator heater (2, 20). Using a laser apparatus (3, 30, 30', 31, 32), regions (10'') of the surface to be coated are heated further and the surface layer is generated on the article (10, 10', 10''). The apparatus comprises the laser device (3, 30, 30', 31, 32) and the RF/MF heater (2, 20) which allow the article (10, 10', 10'') to be thermally influenced and treated by both simultaneously. The surface layers (101) produced according to the process have improved quality since the process permits a clearly improved adherence to temperature and other process parameters. <IMAGE>
