[origin: WO2005120923A1] A method for determining quantities characteristic of a moving object, in particular the outline of a railway train, characterised by: scanning with at least one laser telemeter, the laser signal of which is amplitude modulated, by rotating it about an axis parallel to the direction of movement of said object, measuring the distances between said telemeter and the corresponding point struck by the laser beam, after establishing a relationship between the scanning angle assumed by the laser beam at the moment of measurement and the value of the corresponding distance measured, then processing the determined data, to hence determine points on the outline of said object.
