[origin: WO2012048669A1] The invention relates to a method for the carburizing and carbonitriding of metallic materials, which is performed rapidly and uniformly in atmospheric furnaces and using hydrocarbon gases and gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen and ammonia. Heating is performed in a first method step; a hydrocarbon gas is added in a second method step; and the gas flow is turned off in a third method step. The method can be completed with fourth to sixth method steps.
