By means of the control unit (7) for each of the predetermined times (T1, T2, T3) with reference to the sensor data a distance value (a1, a2, a3) is determined, which describes a distance between the distance sensor (3) and at least one predetermined reflection point (R1, R2, R3, R4) of the object (8), and for classification of the object (8) a progression (10) of the distance values (a1, a2, a3) as a function of the time (t) is compared with a predetermined reference progression.
